"Finally comes the poet: Jesus' Parables in the Gospel of Luke"

From Billy Collins  to Jay-Z. From Walt-Whitman, Emily Dickinson to Bob Dylan, poetry is able to express truth in ways that prose does not.

In Passage to India, Walt Whitman praises poetry for its ability to see the invisible in the visible and the glory in the ordinary. Whitman's agenda is his own, but his words express well the Christian's sense of Jesus and how he offers an entirely new way to look at the world. Emily Dickenson proposes that all the truth at once, 'told bold as brass', will be too bright and dazzling for people to understand. She suggests the remedy is to tell the truth with a kind explanation as one would explain to a child. It must be watered down and made simpler so that it dazzles gradually without blinding everyone.

This is  exactly what Jesus does in his parables. He tells riddles, paradoxes, parables and stories that shatter fixed conclusions and overwhelm tired explanations of the way the world works.
